Exploring the Effect of Obstructions on Airflow (click photo to be redirected)
This simulates a phenomenon called vortex shedding. An object blocking airflow can create alternating spinning pockets of air in its wake. It is a rather beautiful form of turbulence that occurs for a number of reasons, especially in the wake of irregularly shaped objects such as people.
As a handler, how can you minimise any vortices or turbulence you create? Additionally, are there any instances you can think of where your dog might benefit from more turbulence?
Answers and explanations
You are an obstruction inside a search area, and your very body is altering the flow of air.
By working behind your dog, you allow them to examine a given space before you have a chance to move in. This way, you limit your influence of air flow. On the other hand, in cold or wind-free environments, your dog might benefit from your ability to move into a space and stir up the air.
